Snake jewelry is one of the oldest motifs in jewelry, and its meaning has stayed remarkably steady: a serpent sheds its skin and survives, so it stands for rebirth, protection and, when it bites its own tail, eternity. It is also unapologetically sensual, which is why it never quite goes away.
What snake jewelry means
Rebirth. A snake sheds its skin and emerges new, which made it a symbol of renewal and transformation across cultures.
Eternity. The ouroboros, a serpent swallowing its own tail, has no beginning and no end. A coiled snake ring or a snake bangle that wraps around itself carries the same idea.
Protection and wisdom. In ancient Greece the serpent wound around the staff of Asclepius, the god of medicine; it still appears on medical emblems today.
Love. When Prince Albert proposed to Queen Victoria in 1839, he gave her a ring shaped as a serpent set with an emerald, her birthstone. The Victorians wore snakes as a promise of everlasting love for decades after.
A short history
Romans wore coiled serpent bracelets on the upper arm. The Victorians made the snake the sentimental motif of the century, in rings, lockets and necklaces with enameled scales and gemstone eyes. In the twentieth century, Italian goldsmiths turned the snake’s movement into a technique: Tubogas, tightly wound gold bands named after the flexible gas pipes they resemble, which wrap the wrist or neck like a living coil.
Snake motif or snake chain?
Two different things share the name. Snake motif jewelry depicts a serpent: a head, scales, a coil. A snake chain is a construction: tightly joined plates that form a smooth, round, flexible tube that looks like a snake’s skin. Both are in our snake jewelry collection.
How to wear it
A snake chain is the quietest way in: a smooth line of gold at 16 or 18 inches, alone or under a pendant.
A coiled ring works on the index or middle finger, where its shape has room to read.
A wrap bracelet or Tubogas is the statement: wear it alone, on a bare wrist, with dark tailoring.
Gold suits the motif best. Yellow gold makes it warm and sensual; white gold makes it cool and graphic. Look for solid gold: plated snakes lose their scales’ detail as the plating wears.
The year of the snake, and gifting
In the Chinese zodiac the Snake stands for wisdom, intuition and elegance, and people born in Snake years (most recently 2013 and 2025) often receive snake jewelry as a birthday gift. Beyond the zodiac, a snake piece makes a pointed gift for a new chapter: a new job, a move or a recovery, anything that feels like shedding a skin. Pair the gift with a line about what it means; that is the part people remember.
Caring for snake jewelry
Snake chains are smooth but they kink if folded: store them hanging or laid straight, and never knot them. Clean solid gold snake pieces with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, getting into the scales, then dry them fully. Tubogas pieces should not be stretched or bent beyond their natural curve.
