About white gold

White gold is not a naturally occurring metal. It is yellow gold alloyed with white metals — typically palladium, nickel or silver — to shift its colour, then usually finished with rhodium plating for a brighter, cooler surface. The karat still describes the gold content: 14K is 58.5% gold whatever colour it has been alloyed to.

Rhodium is the part most people are not told about. It is a surface finish, and it wears. On a ring worn daily it may need renewing every year or two; on a pendant it can last far longer. This is normal rather than a fault, and replating is routine work for any jeweller.

White gold suits diamonds because the metal does not cast colour into the stone. A near colourless diamond set in yellow gold can pick up warmth from the setting; the same stone in white gold reads cooler and closer to its graded colour.
